With the intention of filling a gap in their model lineup since the Honda S2000 departed the manufacturing plant in 2009, Honda has debuted last week at the Geneva Auto Show their model to fill that gap, the 306-horsepower Honda Civic Type-R to take on the rivals at Subaru WRX STi and Volkswagen Golf R, which both offer All-Wheel-Drive while the Civic Type-R only offers Front-Wheel-Drive. However, while the Civic's rivals come in at a starting price about the $40,000 mark, this Type-R comes in at a starting price point in the middle $30,000's while including very impressive technology and features, like Brembo performance brakes, an adaptive suspension, three driving modes, and a limited-slip front differential, all of which none of it's competitors offer around the same price point. The new Honda Civic Type-R, which will be making its North American debut as it has been sold in the European and Asian markets for years, will be hitting dealership showrooms this Spring, with which Honda aims to prove that it is still a thrill-seeking automotive manufacturer for car enthusiasts while still showing it can be sensible.
The Civic Type R's powertrain only comes in one offering; a six-speed manual transmission with a rev-matching feature for easier downshifts and no option for an automatic. The powertrain, however, is mainly unchanged from previous models. A 2.0-Liter Turbocharged four-cylinder engine houses itself under the hood of the new Type-R, producing 306-horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. To go along with the power plant and to get the new Civic around quickly and efficiently, Honda has provided the new Civic with a body that is 40% more rigid than the previous model and throwing on new dampers, bushings, and springs in the suspension, an all-new front-end consisting of aluminum lower control arms and steering knuckles to aid in reducing understeer into corners, which front-wheel-drive cars are notoriously prone to.
